Biotic Relationships:
Symbiotic Relationships. Symbiosis Symbiosis is a close ecological relationship between the individuals of two (or more) different species.
Population – group of individuals of the same species
Goal 5: Ecology. Why Study Ecology interactions between organisms and their environments Ecology is the study of interactions between organisms and their.
Interactions Name that Relationship!. Name That Relationship!  Acacia ants live on the bullhorn acacia tree, which provides the ants with food and shelter.
Symbiotic Relationships. What is symbiosis? What it means: Two organisms that live together Temporarily or for a longer time At least one of the organisms.

Relationships in the Ecosystem. What are the types of relationships? 1)Predator / Prey 2)Competition 3)Symbiosis A) commensalism B) mutualism C) parasitism.

Explain how this diagram represents the flow of energy through an ecosystem ?
Symbiosis Any close relationship between species.
Symbiotic Relationships Mutualism- benefits both organisms Commensalism- benefits one and the other is neither helped nor harmed Parasitism- benefits one.

Relationships within Ecosystems The who, what, where, when, why of it all.
Symbiotic Relationships Symbiosis- Any relationship in which two species live closely together. 3 Types of symbiosis: 1. Mutualism 2. Commensalism 3.
Aim: How do symbiotic relationships differ? DO NOW 1.Describe what you see in this image. 2.Do you think this fish is being harmed? Explain why or why.
Not all relationships are predator - prey. What is symbiosis? What are the different kinds of symbiosis? Examples SYMBIOSIS.
Symbiotic Relationships Mrs. Ransom. What is symbiosis? Symbiosis is a close ecological relationship between the individuals of two (or more) different.

+ - OR - 0 OR + + G.O.T. = Get On Task Ecology MY GOAL Measurement TOPIC 6,7,8 MY GOAL G.O.T. = Get On Task Wed 10.10.12 Ecology I will… review symbiosis! Turn to ISN p.57 Look at the bottom Label Mutualism, Commensalism, Parasitism as either a + - OR - 0 OR + + .

Quick Review ISN p.57 + - + + + 0 Close, long term relationship  3 types: One benefits/other harmed + - Both species benefit + + 1 benefits/other not affected + 0 Symbiosis: Parasitism Mutualism Commensalism

Parasitism is… One organism benefits – other harmed. Ex: leech Ex: ticks Ex: tapeworms P

Athlete’s Foot Fungus

Mutualism is… Both species benefit from the relationship. Ex: Ants & Acacia trees = ants get nectar & tree gets protection Ex: Insects & Flower Pollination Ex: ‘Cleaning Stations’  fish travel for mile for to find shrimp that clean their mouths & gill slits Ex: Coral & Algae = coral feed off of photosynthetic algae & algae get a place to live Ex: Termite with bacteria in gut M

Bacteria in our Digestive System The term probiotic comes from the Latin or Gree pro, “before, forward”, and bios, or “life” — thus probiotics are life-promoting. In this case, we use the term probiotics to refer to beneficial bacteria. We have billions of friendly bacteria living in our digestive tract. If you extracted all of the microbes that live in your body, you’d have over a quart of sludge. Each person’s bacterial flora may be as unique as fingerprints. Friendly bacteria help us digest our food and absorb nutrients effectively. In a sense, we don’t actually digest many components of our food — the bacteria digest it.

Commensalism is… One species benefits, other is unaffected. Ex: Cattle Egret & cow – egret gets food when insects fly away from cattle while grazing Ex: Barnacles on whales Ex: Flatworm on Horseshoe Crab Ex: Shark & remora Ex: Squirrel in Oak tree M/C

The Pearl Fish… & the Sea Cucumber…
