Five Themes of Geography Movement and Region Five Themes of Geography

Monday, September 29 Welcome! Please come in quietly and take out Interactive Notebooks. Open to the Warm-Up Section. 9/29/14 Warm-Up #12 “What is the difference between absolute location and relative location?” Answer:

Movement Movement is how people, things, and ideas get from place to place on the earth. Your lunch was made from somewhere – the ingredients transported from one place to another place. How did you get to school today?

Movement Think about products you use on a daily basis. Were they made in the United States? Check the tags on your clothes and school supplies. What does it say? How did those products get to be in your hands?

Region https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chUU-0OvOEU http://www.brainpop.com/socialstudies/geography/geographythe mes/

Region Regions can be defined by a number of characteristics including area, language, political divisions, religions, and vegetation (for example, grassland, desert, rain forest). Region divides the world into manageable units for geographic study. Regions have some sort of characteristic that unifies the area. Regions can be formal, functional, or vernacular.

Region Formal regions are those that are designated by official boundaries, such as cities, states, counties, and countries. For the most part, they are clearly indicated and publicly known. Functional regions are defined by their connections. For example, the circulation area for a major city area is the functional region of that paper. Vernacular regions are perceived regions, such as "The South," "The Midwest," or the "Middle East;" they have no formal boundaries but are understood in our mental maps of the world.
