6.1 Federalism A political system in which the power is divided between a central government and smaller regional governments
6.2 US = 1st nation with a federalist system of government Remember: States had power Needed to work together
Power Divided into 3 categories Expressed Concurrent Reserved Page 99 (remember chapter 4?)
Expressed Specifically granted to federal government “C” lists 17 Coin $$ Make treaties
Reserved State Power “C” has some requirements Full Faith & Credit Clause States honor and recognize and enforce other state’s public actions EX: drivers license
Concurrent Powers that are shared by the national government and the state government. EX: Taxes Road Upkeep
AND……. Privileges and Immunities Clause You can enjoy the rights of all states
Don’t Forget…. 10th “A”………..allows states to control Schools Businesses Resources Establish local governments
Federal System Benefits 1. Protects against tyranny of the majority Dividing the decision making process Most are satisfied & feel respected
2. Unity But not uniformity Groups with different values and ways of life can live together in peace States can pass laws to reflect the needs & goals of their citizens
3. Policy flexibility States can solve problems with own solutions Success?...other states may follow…… EX:
4. Political Participation People can be involved in their home state Change at the local level is easier than national level. EX:
