PERCEPTION OF SELF AND OTHERS What does the word “perception” mean to you? Give an example. Perception: the process of using your senses to gather and process information about your surroundings.

STAGES OF PERCEPTION STAGE 1: TAKING IN INFORMATION Sensory information: touch, taste, smell, hear, see STAGE 2: ORGANIZING THE INFORMATION Your brain sorts it, so you can interpret it! STAGE 3: INTERPRETING THE INFORMATION Your brain assigns meaning to it!

Why Our Perceptions Differ… Physical Functions: how your brain works, your health, age, gender, size, sharpness of senses, how you feel that day. Background: where you grew up, how you were raised, prior knowledge about the subject. Mood: (we ALL know how this affects perception, right?) Focus: varies depending on what you are thinking about.

How would you describe yourself TO yourself? self-concept How would you describe yourself TO yourself? Jot down some ideas. Our self-concept affects your behavior, communication style, and how others perceive you.
