What happens when a hot wheel is pushed across the table and then falls over the edge? OR What happens when a base-jumper runs across a surface and then jumps off the edge?

It is time to combine linear motion and the concept of free fall!!!

Example 1: If you throw a baseball off the edge of a bottomless canyon at a rate of 25m/s, how far below the horizontal will the ball be 5 seconds after it is thrown?

Example 1 continued: What is the balls horizontal displacement from the edge after 5 seconds? What is the straight line displacement of the ball after 5 seconds?

Example 2: A base-jumper runs across a building and jumps from the edge which is 100m above the ground. If his parachute fails and he lands 200m from the base of the building, how fast was his original run? (HINT: How long did he have to think through his bad choice?)

Intro to LAB EXAMPLE… A marble is launched off of a table (125cm tall) with a horizontal velocity of 0.3km/hr. How long is the marble in the air? How far from the edge of the table will the marble land?

Upwardly launched objects respond to gravity, just along their “projected” straight line path.

Equations Flight Time, t = (2vo sin Ɵ) / g Max height, ymax = (vo sin Ɵ)2 / 2g Range, Xmax  = (vo cosƟ)(FT)

Example 3: A cannonball is shot upward at a 45degree angle with a velocity of 20m/s.If it remains in the air for 4.5 seconds, how far will it be from its origin?
