Objectives Define physical activity. Identify and recall the benefits of exercise. Identify and categorise the potential barriers to exercise.

Physical Activity What is Physical Activity? How would you characterise it? Anything that gets the body moving (not necessarily vigorously) and an umbrella term. Play Sport Physical recreation/outdoor recreation Physical Education/Outdoor Recreation

What is a Healthy Lifestyle? What do you think should be in a healthy lifestyle? Do you think society has this balance? If not, what interferes with this: Stress levels Less time to prepare meals Less time to commit to exercise programmes Healthy balanced lifestyles: Day to day life that has equilibrium, quality and wellness and which includes the above!.

Definitions EXERCISE: Planned or structured physical activity requiring physical effort, aimed at improving health and fitness. Life-long physical activity: Enjoyable, health-enhancing movement that is sustained through life e.g. Walking, Yoga Lifetime Sport: Activities that can be enjoyed over the course of a lifetime, e.g. table tennis, tennis or badminton.

Benefits of Regular Exercise: Physical Active people are 50% less likely to have CHD than inactive people. There are 3 categories: Provision, Opportunity & Esteem Provision – The availability of facilities which allow for participation Esteem –The confidence to take part Opportunity – The chance to take part based on factors such as time, money etc.
