First Draft: “Undercover Parent” Response Essay Quickwrite: (5 minutes):Which of Coben’s examples seem(s) exaggerated to you?

The Writing Task (Activity 17, Page 10) You will have extended time to plan, write, and revise an essay on the topic below. Before you begin writing, read the passage carefully and plan what you will say. Your essay should be as well-organized and carefully written as you can make it. T

Activity 17: Consider the Writing Task Before you start to write your essay, read the passage carefully and plan what you will say.

Read the Summary of Coben’s article on p. 10 Highlight the main idea.

Analyze the writing prompt: Explain Coben’s argument in “The Undercover Parent” and discuss the ways in which you agree or disagree with his analysis and conclusion. Support your position by correctly quoting and paraphrasing details from Coben’s text, and then provide supporting arguments or counter-arguments in response to his assertions.

Anticipate opposing points of view and disarm them. If you acknowledge there are opposing arguments and answer them, your argument is stronger.

Keep the tone of your essay calm and sensible. Establish Your Ethos Keep the tone of your essay calm and sensible. Just as you probably won’t win a verbal argument by shouting and making mean or nasty comments, don’t expect your reader to respond well to such tactics in your writing.

Pro-Con Graphic Organizer Make a pro-con graphic organizer. On the left (PRO) side list Coben’s reasons for monitoring teens. On the right (CON) side list the reasons Coben’s article gives for not monitoring teens.

Consider your Audience. Complete the following sentence: I am writing to persuade ______________ to ___________ with Coben’s stand that parents should monitor their teens on the internet.

Activity 20, p. 13 Answer questions #1 and #3with at least one complete sentence each. Answer the three questions in #2 with at least three complete sentences. Look for articles on the internet opposed to parental spyware. Answer question #4 with a complete sentence mentioning them. Draft a concise working thesis of one good paragraph. Not two paragraphs. One paragraph. 
