America Going to Preschool before Kindergarten. Little kids eat cheerios as finger food vs. later on as cereal. The average outfit is jeans and a shirt. The American accent. People eat fast food/go out to eat a lot.

Dubai People wear more conservative clothing. The religion is mostly Muslim and therefore people need to respect it. No eating or drinking in public during the day while Ramadan is occurring. Remove your shoes as you enter if you are invited to a majilis. When greeting a member of the opposite sex who is Muslim, it is important not to offer to shake hands unless they extend their hand out first.

Language Arabic is the prominently used language in Dubai.

Religion Belief Systems Islam is the main religion. Must fast during Ramadan. Pray facing Mecca five times a day. Forbidden from indulging in any of the entertaining services offered. You can still eat & drink during Ramadan in designated areas, but not in public during the day. Dress modestly particularly in conservative areas and public places. When visiting mosques they wear lose fitting clothes covering their arms, shoulders, and legs. Visitor and expatriates should not flaunt their western culture habits in the streets. Religious Non- Religious

Values Family is the most important institution in society. Combination of the traditional values of the East (modesty) and the technology of the West (development). Protect and promote its traditions as conveyed by Islam, as well as its Arab identity and culture. The abuse of any of the symbols of the UAE’s rulers, flags, and national emblem is a crime punishable by law.

Attitudes Modest No PDA No loud music and dancing Keep public places clean Alcohol consumption is closely regulated No holding, consuming, buying, or selling drugs No profane language No begging * Not obeying these laws can result in being subjected to fines or imprisonment.

Manners Accept food and eat food with your right hand. Avoid showing the soles of your feet or pointing your feet at anyone. If you are hosting Muslim guests, do not offer them alcohol or pork.

Customs Religion is a significant role in the culture of Dubai. Their culture & laws are designed to ensure that the dignity and self- respect of everyone are upheld to the highest standards, regardless of where people come from.

Communications Don’t try to communicate with someone by pointing at them or calling them with your finger. Do not use vulgar language. When greeting a member of the opposite sex who is Muslim, it is important not to offer to shake hands unless they extend their hand out first.
