Presentation transcript:

Mastering the AP Multiple choice Part One Mrs. Knighten-Miller

What should you expect to do? Follow sophisticated syntax Respond to diction Be comfortable with upper-level vocabulary Be familiar with rhetorical terminology

More expectations Make inferences Be sensitive to irony and tone Recognize components of organization and style Be familiar with modes of discourse and rhetorical strategies Recognize how information contained in citations contributes to the author’s purpose

Thumb through Take no more than a minute and thumb through the exam looking for: The length of the selections The time periods or writing styles (if you can recognize them) The number of questions asked A quick idea of the type of questions

timing Be SUPER aware of the time It is suggested that you have a watch in front of you The test naturally breaks into 15-minute sections The test DOES NOT become progressively more difficult Pace yourself at one question per minute

Tips! Read the text carefully DO NOT waste time reading the questions ahead of time Slow does and read with your senses Underline, circle, and annotate the text Read closely, paying attention to punctuation, syntax, diction, pacing, and organization Read as if you were reading to an audience, emphasizing meaning and intent Hear the words in your head Use your finger to underscore the lines as you read them Use all information given you, such as title, author, date of publication and footnotes

scoring Scan There are always five choices A question left blank gets zero points Formula: Number right- (number wrong x 0.25)=raw score rounded up or down to the nearest whole number Fictional example: Assume 44 questions and you answered 40 correctly and left none blank 40- (15 x 0.25)=35-3.75=36

Scoring continued The multiple choice section is worth 45% of total It is combined with essay scores for a composite score Let’s Try it
