Cold War Definition Cold War, the ideological conflict that developed after World War II between the United States and the Soviet Union and their allies. The Cold War was fought on political, economic, and propaganda fronts. The US and the Soviet Union never directly fought each other with weapons; instead, each superpower supported opposing sides in proxy wars in multiple countries.

ASPIRE and the Cold War - Politics United States of America NATO – North Atlantic Treaty Organization Union of Soviet Socialists Republics Warsaw Pact United Nations CIA KGB MAD – Mutually Assured Destruction The Truman Doctrine ASPIRE and the Cold War - Politics

NATO – The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was created in 1949 by the United States, Canada, and several Western European nations to provide collective security against the Soviet Union. They agreed that an attack on one country would be an attack on all countries in the Alliance.

Maps of the Soviet Union (USSR)

What is the Soviet Union (USSR?) The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics A nation made up of separate republics/states Followed political system based on 'communism' - state run economy One political party Used a constitution that guaranteed many basic human rights Was actually very autocratic – controlled either by one person or by a committee of people (Polit Bureau) What is the Soviet Union (USSR?)

Countries in Eastern Europe that were technically independent but were actually controlled by the Soviet Union They were part of a treaty organization that gave solidarity and support to the Soviet Union and provided a barrier between the Soviet Union and Western European powers. Warsaw Pact

The CIA and KGB – Cold War Spies

KGB KGB - Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti (KBG), English Committee for State Security, foreign intelligence and domestic security agency of the Soviet Union (i.e. secret police & spies!). During the Soviet era the KGB’s responsibilities also included the protection of the country’s political leadership, the supervision of border troops, and the general surveillance of the population.

The CIA CIA – Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) is a civilian foreign intelligence service of the United States federal government, tasked with gathering, processing, and analyzing national security information from around the world, primarily through the use of human intelligence (HUMINT) – not supposed to work inside the US or on US citizens in the US.

MAD – Mutually Assured Destruction MAD – the idea that since both the US/NATO and the USSR had tens of thousands of nuclear weapons that neither country would actually start a war because it would destroy the whole world.

The Truman Doctrine Truman Doctrine – stated in 1947 by US President Harry S Truman that the US would intervene to support countries around that world that were being threatened by the Soviet Union.

Battle of the 'isms'

What is capitalism? An economic system in which property is owned and controlled by individuals who decide how to use their property without the government telling them how to do it.  It is often called the "Free Market".

Socialism A type of economy that allows the government to control the resources of the nation. It often involves taxation and redistribution of wealth from those with more money to those with less. It involves the state using public money to build infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, parks, etc...

The final stage of economic development according to Karl Marx There is actually no government There is no private property Citizens govern themselves in democratic worker councils that decide how resources would be distributed This would only happen after a country was completely industrialized and the workers were educated enough to be able to take control of the political and economic structures of society, thus destroying the old capitalist or socialist structures Communism

Domino Theory The idea that if one country became a communist country then all of the other countries around it would become communist countries – like a bunch of dominoes falling over.

Bourgeois – Capitalists Free Market State Controlled  Bourgeois – Capitalists Working Class Surplus Value/Profit Exploitation ASPIRE - Economics

Capitalists vs. Working Class Capitalists – the people who actually own most of the capital (property, businesses and resources) in a country. They own and make most major economic decisions and profit most from the economy. Also called the Bourgeois. Working Class – the people who do most of the actual work producing and making good and services in the country. They are usually paid a salary and their working conditions are controlled by Capitalists. Also called the Proletarians. Unions – created to represent the Working Class in order to allow the Working class to find some control over their salary and working conditions.

ASPIRE - Area First World – Developed World Third World – Developing World Warsaw Pact NATO Iron Curtain – East and West Germany The Berlin Airlift Latin America Asia Africa Non Aligned Movement ASPIRE - Area

NATO Vs. WARSAW PACT - Europe

The Iron Curtain – See the red line!!!

The Berlin Blockade and Airlift – 1948-1949 The Soviet Union was blockading goods from coming to West Berlin. The US set up an airlift to take good into W. Berlin. The world was on the brink of WWIII – but the US and USSR did not begin a new war. This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA

Structure The _________________ side is better for humanity than ______________ because _____________. CD - For example, __________________________ (CD from definitions). CM - This is better for humanity because ______________________. Other Factors (giving the other side of the argument) OFCD – Others might say that ______________ is harmful for humanity. OFCM – This is more harmful for society because________________.

Model Sentence The Free Market economy is better for humanity than state controlled  economy. The Free market, which lets individuals decide how and when to spend money and use property, The Free market is better for humanity because it supports individual freedom. Others might say that the free market is not better for humanity.
