TRADE & THE GROWTH OF TOWNS THE MIDDLE AGES TRADE & THE GROWTH OF TOWNS

BY 1300, MANY EUROPEAN TOWNS WERE GROWING INTO CITIES Paris grew to a population of 300,000 Largest city in the world

CAUSES OF TOWN GROWTH Trade grew so that market towns became larger Traders gathered at convenient places for travelers such as river crossings & highways Manors were overcrowded

EFFECTS OF TOWN GROWTH Lords allowed peasants to buy their freedom to move to towns A new middle class grew, made up of merchants & trader Cathedral schools attracted scholars & became centers of learning Diseases (bubonic plague) spread quickly in towns

BUBONIC PLAGUE Black Plague or Black Death Killed 1/3 of Europe’s population (1347-1350) Transmitted from by fleas from infected rats Causes spots of blood which turned black under the skin Left a shortage of workers

GUILDS Union of tradesmen that maintained work standards & set prices Apprentice-Journeyman-Guildsman Eventually led in struggle for independence & help govern towns
