Presentation transcript:

Purpose: To write a multi-paragraph essay that establishes a problem with Neshaminy’s course offerings and provides a reasonable solution, proven through credible and ample research. Learn methods for researching a single topic using various resources. Blend quotations properly into the essay. Create a defensible claim. Understand how to adequately construct an argument and support it with credible and reliable research. Write multiple drafts of the essay (pre-write, drafting, revision and editing). Recognize the difference between plagiarism and paraphrasing. Correctly cite a source and quotations used in research. Create a research paper with proper citations and Works Cited page.

Creating a Claim  Prompt: What new course (title and curriculum) do you think your school should offer and how would this course benefit students? Use appropriate and specific examples from your reasoning, experience, or observations to support your argument. Take a look at the feedback I provided you on the timed writing. Now consider all of the pre-writes we did yesterday. Generate a claim that is defensible and answers the prompt.

Models Which claim is better? Why?

General vs. Specific Which of the following claims are specific? A. B.

Researching Using the bookmark, use the school’s resources to research about the class you want to add to our school curriculum. Consider what benefits there might be of your course (increased concentration, higher likelihood of scholarships for college, experience in a STEM field, a certificate that could be useful in finding employment, etc.) Consider what successes other schools have had in implementing this course and what they offer. Consider what scientific research supports your course (better analytical skills, increased metacognition). Print out your research (you should have about five sources to pull from). Save the links to your research for later.
