World History from World War I to World War II (SSWH16-18) (SSUSH19)

World Map (Label 7 continents and 5 oceans)

Causes of World War I and II (MAIN) 1. Militarism- Arms races between nations; Built up to intimidate other nations (hint: give a kid a hammer) Russian army had over 1,000,000 Germany and France had 900,000 each 2. Alliances - agreements between 2 or more countries to defend and help each other 3. Imperialism- The policy of extending the rule of an empire or nation over foreign countries, or of gaining colonies 4. Nationalism- pride in ones country or culture and willingness to defend it in war

Effects of World War I Treaty of Versailles -Establishment of League of Nations -Punish Germany German reparations (pay billions of $) Germany required to take full blame for starting war Germany forced to drastically reduce military forces Causes deep resentment by Germans against Allied nations Economy declines, currency plummets in value Germans want radical change! (Hitler)

Effects of WWI Approximately 20 million soldier and civilian casualties (Europe, SW Asia , Africa) Many African and Middle Eastern colonies (before controlled by Germany and Ottoman Empire) were reassigned to France and England. This leads to growing nationalism and call for independence (but not until after WW2)
