The Sweater – A Story of Lost Love and the Sale of Goods Act

Siti was a student here at MMU, Studying Business Law, just like all of you.

Listening to the details of the Sale of Goods Act, She was bored one day, Listening to the details of the Sale of Goods Act,

So she took out her iPhone, To use Wikipedia to look up a fact.

But then she felt the chill, From the air con that was always so strong,

So she changed her mind, And headed to www.gap.com.

“Pink sweater, not too cool, not too hot, The ad said: “Pink sweater, not too cool, not too hot, Straight from the factory, brand new.”

“I need a sweater,” Siti thought, “It will keep me warm and will look nice too.”

The lecturer was droning on about conditions and warranties, “Well,” Siti thought, “he’s wearing long sleeves so he won’t freeze.”

She pulled out her mother’s credit card, and the sweater was bought,

Today was a productive day, even though she had learned nothing that the lecturer had taught.

In the Gap.com factory, Ali was taking orders for the day, When he saw one for a pink sweater come his way,

“Who is this lovely person?” he dreamt, “Is she tall, is she short, is she mean, is she kind?”

“Oh how, in this miserable factory, will I ever a nice girl find?”

Ali was shy but decided to take a chance, He would be brave, He would change his life, and get out of this cave.

So into the package with the sweater he placed,

A note that said, “You could be my queen and I could be your king,

I know this is a bit creepy, but here’s my number, please give me a ring.”

Back in Melaka, Siti was happy to see, Finally, her pink sweater! Now she would be warm and stylish as well,

She tore open the box and out of it, the sweater fell.

“It’s purple, purple!” she screamed.

She looked closely at the threads, the material and the lace,

That set her off: “And it’s second hand, it’s not even new!” And there she found hidden in the seams, some hand stitches and a bit of glue, That set her off: “And it’s second hand, it’s not even new!”

But then Siti recalled her lecturer’s lesson, At least one thing she had been able to catch,

Section 15, when goods are bought by description, the description and the product must match.

This was an implied condition under the law, And upon its breach, she could not only get damages,

But she could also rescind the contract, she cleverly saw.

So excited she was, to be as smart as a fox, That she neglected to see a small blue envelope, hidden in the box,

Her motion knocked it over, and the note dropped quietly to the floor, To be seen by human eyes nevermore.

Siti would get her money back, but at what cost? She didn’t know it, but a shy boy in his one brave moment she had lost.

So my great students in BBL2014, Business law is important and can help you protect your wealth,

But at the New Year don’t forget the important things in life, Family, friends, an education and your good health.

And as for our sad friend Siti, all alone, She knew the law but lost her chance,

To find her King, And what might have been, a true romance.
