Bell Work Pick two of the types of descriptive research. What might they be used to study?

Experiments

Experiments Are the only way to establish cause and effect. Has precise requirements to qualify as a valid experiment.

Hypothesis Result of observation or review of previous research.

Designing an Experiment Experimental Group Gets the experimental manipulation Control Group Does not receive experimental manipulation Operational Definitions Description of variable measurement

Variable to be Measured Operational Definition Aggression Number of seconds to honk the horn at the car ahead that isn’t taking off at a light. Low Self-Esteem Number of negative words used in a creative story about themselves. Decision making skills Number of groups able to solve a performance task, like a puzzle.

Experimenter Bias Refers to the possibility that expectations might skew results. Girls and math Single-blind study Participants are unaware of which group they belong to. Double-blind study Participants and researchers are unaware which group the participants belong to.

Variables Independent Dependent Extraneous Manipulated or controlled by researchers to influence the dependent variable. Dependent What the researchers measure to determine effect of independent variable. Extraneous

Steps

What you should do

Today Brainstorm questions on a scrap piece of paper.

Pick one that you would like to know more about. Hold on to the scrap paper, you may need it.

Research Research your question, see what’s been found. If your question has been answered, try a different question.
