Owens/Lovelady Team 2nd Grade Buford Academy Curriculum Night 2015-2016

I have been married to my husband, Brad, for 21 years!

All About Mrs. Lovelady Teaching Experience at Buford Academy I have had the pleasure of teaching at Buford Academy for the past 16 years. I have taught 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grades.   Educational Background *BFA from University of Georgia *Masters and Specialist of Education from Piedmont College Personal Background My husband and I have been married for 28 years. We have two terrific sons who both graduated from Buford High School. We have lived in Buford for the last 25 years. 

Agenda Communication Send this folder to school each day. The green communication folder is sent home each day. Remove the papers in the “Keep at Home” pocket. Return any papers in the “Return to School” pocket. --What’s in the “Green Folder” on Friday? graded work, newsletter, information from the office, and other important notes Send this folder to school each day. -Email us if you have a question. Please ask your child first if it is about an assignment….. They probably know the answer. ---Please understand that we can’t conference with you during drop-in visits to our classroom/lunchroom. Homework Spelling Math Reading -Spelling Homework will be a center during Language Arts. However, you may want to practice the words with your child at home during the week. - Test every Friday. Math -Math worksheet some nights (check agenda and folder) -Practice addition and subtraction facts. -Tests after each chapter (usually weekly) Reading -Read 15-20 minutes each night. -Send in your library books every day. We have time to read in class too. Beginning in the next couple of weeks students will have a reading log to complete each week. -We will have a weekly reading test.

Buford Academy Reading Buford Academy’s reading program is called Scholastic Counts. It is somewhat like the Accelerated Reading program at the Elementary. The questions on the quizzes are higher order thinking. Students will be required to read and checkout “just right” books. Students are currently learning skills to help them find their “just right” books. Students will keep a reading journal in class. The teacher will take a weekly grade on the journal entries for the week. The reading journal will begin in few weeks. Students will also have a weekly reading log to complete at home. Bring Your Books to School Each Day!

Report cards are sent every nine weeks. FORMATIVE-CLASSWORK, QUIZZES, LABS, IN-CLASS PROJECTS SUMMATIVE- ASSESSMENTS All Subjects: 55% formative 40% Summative 5% Homework Report cards are sent every nine weeks. Look at PowerSchool- Passwords were mailed. Call the office if lost. Conduct is: S, N, U in all areas

Classroom Choices Rule #1 – Listen when your teacher is talking. Rule #2 – Follow directions quickly. Rule #3 – Respect others, respect yourself, respect your school. Rule #4 – Raise your hand to speak or stand. Rule #5 – Be safe; be honest. Rewards: Positive Notes, free time, stickers, extra recess, tickets Consequences: warning, parent notification, isolation in another classroom, loss of recess, loss of one or more privileges, referral to the counselor, opportunity room, out of school suspension. Testing 2nd Grade Students will be given SLOs (Student Learning Objectives) and EQAs (benchmark tests) throughout the year to document progress.

Buford Academy Title I Parent/Student/Teacher Compact As a Parent I agree to… Be an active participant attending Open House, Curriculum Night, Parent Teacher Conferences, and other events throughout the school year. Be a supportive parent by having my child read at least 20 minutes five nights each week to help increase their Lexile reading level, by assisting with homework completion, and reviewing school communication nightly. Be a supportive parent by practicing Math facts with my child at least 10 minutes two or three nights each week.

Buford Academy Title I Parent/Student/Teacher Compact As a Teacher I agree to... Ba an active participant by regularly updating PowerSchool and classroom websites, scheduling parent-teacher conferences twice a year, and consistently communicating through phone calls, email and newsletters. Be a supportive teacher by providing research based differentiated instruction that helps to ensure students can achieve their Reading Lexile goals. Be a proactive teacher by communicating with parents benchmark data to address standards and skills related to math.

Buford Academy Title I Parent/Student/Teacher Compact As a Student I agree to... Be an active participant by cooperating in classroom activities, asking questions when I do not understand, and completing classroom assignments. Be a responsible student by reading at least 20 minutes five nights a week, completing my homework, studying for tests, and reviewing school communication with my parents. Be a responsible student by practicing math facts at home for at least 10 minutes two or three nights a week.

Title I We need your input for Title Funds.  Mrs. Pulley is open for suggestions on ways to best use Title funds to meet the needs of all students.  You may email her at kaleen.pulley@bufordcityschools.org.  Ways we currently use Title funds are:  Technology, Paraprofessionals, Summer School, After School/Saturday School, and Professional Development for teachers.

It is important for children to be on time for school. Many morning tasks are completed before announcements at 8:15. Children must be here prior to 8:25.

Attendance Improving attendance, tardies and checkouts is a school improvement goal of Buford Academy A written excuse within 2 days of the absence must be sent Absences of 10 or more days in a school year will result in contact from the school counselor or system social worker Students should not be checked out from 2:50-3:10 pm Students with perfect attendance each quarter are eligible for a reward
