Lost Colony at Roanoke

Roanoke Colony – 1584-1590 Roanoke Colony was established by England in what is today North Carolina. It was the first attempt by England to establish a colony in North America. The colony was founded by Sir Walter Raleigh

Roanoke Colony 1584-1590 Queen Elizabeth I of England told Sir Walter Raleigh to establish a colony on North America or lose his right to colonize all together. First Voyage: Raleigh sent some men to scope out the landscape. These men came back to England with two natives from the Croatan tribe to give further information about the landscape.

First Settlers of Roanoke Settlers blamed the natives of stealing a silver cup Some of the settlers broke off from Roanoke to make a colony in the Chesapeake Bay region. Other settlers broke off from the main group to establish a colony on the northern part of Roanoke Island. The Baptism of Virginia Dare – the first English child born in the New World

The Lost Colony In 1587, Governor of Roanoke Colony John White left to go to England to explain that the colony needed supplies and support. They got to England but from 1587 until 1590, no one was able to leave England and go back to Roanoke because of the war with Spain, which was fought on the sea. On August 18, 1590, White and his men landed where the Roanoke Colony was supposed to be but found no evidence of the 90 colonists, including his granddaughter Virginia Dare. There was no sign of struggle or battle. The only thing they ever found was the word CROATOAN written on a fence post.

The Lost Colony Before White left them, he told them to carve a Maltese cross if they had been killed by warfare. All of the houses and settlement buildings had been taking down, which they couldn’t have done in a hurry. All that was left: CROATOAN carved on a fence post.
