Kindergarten Math Night March 14, 2019

The Seven Clusters Cluster 1 Building A Mathematical Community through Exploring Attributes Cluster 2 Understanding the Relationship between Numbers and Quantities Cluster 3 Comparing quantities with counting and spatial relationships Cluster 4 Identifying, Describing, Classifying, and Composing Shapes Cluster 5 Number Relationships between and among 1-10 Cluster 6 Exploring parts and wholes with joining and separating Cluster 7 Foundations of Place Value - Exploring numbers 11-20

#1 Building A Mathematical Community through exploring Attributes Recipe for Becoming a Great Mathematician *Learn from your mistakes *Listen to and learn from each other *Ask questions *Persevere when things are difficult

#2 Understanding the Relationship between Numbers and Quantities Number Sense “..The sense of what numbers mean and an ability to perform mental mathematics & to look at the world & make comparisons.” -Gersten and Chard Number Sense Part 1- counting to 20, writing to 10, and understanding number relationships Part 2- answering “how many” (line, circle, scattered) Subitizing- recognize a quantity or group without counting VIDEO

#3 Comparing Quantities with Counting and Spatial Relationships Writing numbers- instead of writing numbers in order, the student is asked to write any number 0-20 Answering How Many- the student needs one to one correspondence. They can use the strategies taught in Cluster 2 to organize their objects Comparing Numbers- students line objects up, stack objects, or count objects to determine greater, less than, and equal to.

#4 Identifying, Describing, Classifying, and Composing Shapes Identify- name and recognize shapes in the word (2D & 3D) Describe- discuss shape attributes (i.e. Sides and vertices) Compare- Discuss the similarities and differences between shapes Create- build or draw shapes Square, triangle, rectangle, circle, hexagon, cone, sphere, cube, cylinder

#5 Number Relationships between & among 1-10 Count to 100 by ones and tens- starting at 1 and also to count on from any given number Add within 10- the focus is not on the symbol, instead children make sense of word problems “the same as” Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10- “break apart” kindergarteners can find all the possible ways to split 4 pieces of candy (0 and 4, 1 and 3, 2 and 2) Find the number that makes 10 when added to a given number- kindergarteners work to find the partner to make 10

#6 Exploring Parts and Wholes with Joining and Separating Kindergarteners use objects and drawings to represent addition and subtraction word problems within 10 Word Problem Types -Add To and Take From -Put Together/Take Apart with the Total Unknown -Put Together/Take Apart with Both Parts Unknown

#7 Foundations of Place Value- Exploring Numbers 11-20 Decompose & Compose Numbers within 10: This helps kindergarteners see patterns within numbers, develop an understanding of relationships among numbers and begin to fluently add and subtract Fluently Add and Subtract within 5: Accurate (get the correct answer) , Efficient (solve a problem easily) and flexible (know a variety of strategies) Place Value with Teen Numbers: 14- Group of 10 and 4 leftovers

NKT data In your folders you will see your child’s NKT data. “This test was designed to measure the conceptual knowledge of number that the average child has at 4, 6, 8, and 10 years.” It shows us how children make sense of quantitative problems It’s administered in kindergarten, first and second grade to show the growth they make over those 3 years. It is not factored into their math grades.

What’s in your folder? Kindergarten Family Letter (pink) Helpful Math Websites to Use at Home (green) Math Mania At Home & Ways a Parent Can Help with MATH (yellow) 3 in a Row: your child is learning how to play this right now!
