Fraction Implementation

Learner reaction What was the learners’ reaction to your thematic unit Pro’s Con’s Student’s loved the fun lesson with the Hershey’s book and the Chocolate candy bars. Students loved working with partners and comparing with each other. 100% of students were fully engaged in this math lesson Students needed more time to talk about answers. Students would have liked to more examples prior to the candy bars. Wanted to eat the manipulatives as we went. Messy

Post assessment 98% of students scored 80% of higher Meeting objectives How well did the learners meet the objectives of this thematic unit? Pre assessment 76 percent of students didn’t have a prior knowledge of fractions. Post assessment 98% of students scored 80% of higher

Evaluation from the perspective of the facilitator From the instructor’s perspective, what worked and what didn’t? o   What would you change? Having students work alone as I went through the book. I am pleased with the engage ment of students. I liked using pair share. Having students teach each other. Students were highly engages in messy science and social studies math . I would have students work in partners more than I did. I would have students apply this to real world Had parent volunteers help with paper mache globes. (equator and Prime Meridian)

Evaluation of the materials or technology effective and appropriate worked and what didn’t Clickers were a very effective review of fraction parts of a whole. Using netbooks to reinforce concepts previously taught. Allowing students to take pictures works wonders. They created their own presentations. Envison video did not load. Projector bulb died. Clickers worked well . Netbooks worked well Document camera and digital cameras worked fine.

Evaluation of the environment modified in any way to improve instruction seating I have had to improve they way students communicate with me and with partners. Students feel they need more time to share with partners and classmates. Give more Concrete time! I have students move their seats for direct instruction. (They can move to a different seating arrangement within 20 seconds) Then for group work students get into their same groups just as fast. (I play the sond Planets on Anmaniacs.)

Continuity and conformity of implementation with the design plan What changes would you make to the design plan to make this unit more effective? I would change my lesson plans to add more hands on and real life experiences. I would have students find fractions around the school and not just the classroom. Clearer preassessment. Spend more time on reenforing positve interaction and using positive teaching strategies. Use more ration when asking questions. I would integrate more science and social studies concepts into math!
