What is the definition of a square? Is a quadrilateral 𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷 a square? Justify your answer. Square: All equal side, and 90°

Core Concept You can use the formulas given below and the Distance Formula to find the perimeters and areas of polygons in the coordinate plane.

Finding Perimeter in the Coordinate Plane Find the perimeter of ∆𝐴𝐵𝐶 with vertices 𝐴 −2,3 , 𝐵 3,−3 , 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐶 −2,−3 Step 1 Draw the triangle in a coordinate plane. Then find the length of each side.

Finding Perimeter in the Coordinate Plane

Identifying a Triangle in the Coordinate Plane Prove that 𝐴 −2,3 , 𝐵 3,−3 , 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐶 −2,−3 forms a right triangle? Step 1 Label the three points and then find the length of each side.

Identifying a Triangle in the Coordinate Plane Remember If it is a right triangle then 𝑎 2 + 𝑏 2 = 𝑐 2 . Likewise If 𝑎 2 + 𝑏 2 = 𝑐 2 then it forms a right triangle 𝑎=5, 𝑏=6, 𝑐= 61 𝑎 2 + 𝑏 2 = 𝑐 2 Formula (5) 2 + (6) 2 = ( 61 ) 2 Substitute 25+36=61 Simplify 61=61 The values are true hence, the 3 points form a right triangle.

Identifying a Parallelogram in the Coordinate Plane Show that equadrilateral ABCD is a parllelogram 𝐴(−3,3), 𝐵(2,5), 𝐶(5,2), 𝐷( 0,0) Step 1 Label the points then connect the point using a line segment. Then find the length of each side.

8.3 Prove It! Task Date 3/8/19 Grab your blinder Copy down the EQ Work on Warm Up Essential question How is the Distance formula related to Pythagorean Theorem? Warm up: Explain if the two lines are perpendicular to each other.

Introduction of Task In this task you need to use all the things you know about quadrilaterals, distance, and slope to prove that the shapes are parallelograms, rectangles, rhombi, or squares. Be systematic and be sure that you give all the evidence necessary to verify your claim. Is 𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷 a parallelogram? Explain how you know. Is 𝐸𝐹𝐺𝐻 a parallelogram? Explain how you know.

Core Concept Ways to Prove a Quadrilateral is a Parallelogram

1a. SOLUTION Method: Show that pair of sides are congruent and parallel. Then apply the Opposite Sides Parallel and Congruent Theorem. First, use the Distance Formula to show that 𝐴𝐵 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐷𝐶 are congruent. 𝐴𝐵 = (−4− −10 ) 2 + (12−12) 2 = 36 𝐴𝐵 =6 𝐷𝐶 = (−12− −6 ) 2 + (8−8) 2 = 36 𝐷𝐶 =6 Because 𝐴𝐵 = 𝐷𝐶 =6 , 𝐴𝐵 = 𝐷𝐶 Second, use the slope formula to show that 𝐴𝐵 ∥ 𝐷𝐶 Slope of 𝐴𝐵 = 12−12 −4−(−10) =0 Slope of 𝐷𝐶 = 8−8 −6−(−12) =0 Because 𝐴𝐵 and 𝐷𝐶 have the same slope, they are parallel. Since. 𝐴𝐵 and 𝐷𝐶 are congruent and parallel. So 𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷 is a parallelogram by the Opposite Sides Parallel and Congruent Theorem.

1b. 𝐸𝐹 = (15−5) 2 + (0−2) 2 = 104 𝐻𝐺 = (13−2) 2 + (−9−(−7)) 2 = 125 𝐴𝐵 ≠ 𝐷𝐶 Then, use the slope formula to show that 𝐴𝐵 ∥ 𝐷𝐶 Slope of 𝐸𝐹 = 10−2 15−5 = 8 10 Slope of 𝐻𝐺 = −9−(−7) 13−2 = −2 11 𝐴𝐵 and 𝐷𝐶 don’t have slope So 𝐸𝐹𝐺𝐻 is not a parallelogram

Rectangle on Coordinate Grid Is 𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷 a rectangle? Explain how you know. Is 𝐸𝐹𝐺𝐻 a rectangle? Explain how you know.

Core Concept Ways to Prove a Quadrilateral is a Rectangle

2a. SOLUTION Method: Show that the diagonal are congruent. Then apply the Rectangle Diagonals Theorem. 𝐴𝐶 = (2−(−8)) 2 + (9−13) 2 = 116 𝐷𝐵 = (2−(−8)) 2 + (13−9) 2 = 116 𝐴𝐶 = 𝐷𝐵 The diagonals are congruent So 𝐸𝐹𝐺𝐻 a rectangle

2b. SOLUTION Method: Show that the diagonal are congruent. Then apply the Rectangle Diagonals Theorem. 𝐸𝐺 = (−9−6) 2 + (7−6) 2 = 226 𝐻𝐹 = (14−(−1)) 2 + (0−(−3)) 2 = 241 𝐴𝐶 ≠ 𝐷𝐵 The diagonals are not congruent So 𝐸𝐹𝐺𝐻 is not a rectangle

Rhombus on Coordinate Grid Is 𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷 a rhombus? Explain how you know. Is 𝐸𝐹𝐺𝐻 a rhombus? Explain how you know.

Core Concept Ways to Prove a Quadrilateral is a Rhombus

3a. SOLUTION Method: Show that the diagonal are perpendicular. Then apply the Rhombus Diagonals Theorem. Slope of 𝐸𝐺 = −6−3 −6−(−6) = −9 0 it is a straight vertical line Slope of 𝐻𝐹 = −2−(−2) −4−(−8) = 0 4 its is a straight horizontal line A vertical line always intersection perpendicular to a horizontal line So 𝐸𝐹𝐺𝐻 is rhombus

3b. SOLUTION Method: Show that the diagonal are perpendicular. Then apply the Rhombus Diagonals Theorem. Slope of 𝐷𝐵 = 2−9 9−3 = −7 6 Slope of 𝐶𝐴 = 8−3 9−3 = 5 6 A vertical line always intersection perpendicular to a horizontal line 𝐷𝐴𝐵𝐶 is not a rhombus

Sqaure on Coordinate Grid Is 𝐴𝐵𝐶𝐷 a square? Explain how you know.
