Limit the Spread of Communism Review from last class: What were the goals of Nato & The Marshall Plan? Limit the Spread of Communism

Containment in Asia Communists were prevented from taking over Europe, but not China China is the world’s largest populous nation. Communism appealed to countries with large populations of peasants. Peasants made up the majority of China’s population. Latin America, Africa and Asia embraced Communism because of the abuse from the Western colonies.

The Fight for China, 1949 Nationalist Party VS Communist parties of China. Communist party was led by Mao Zedong which was supported by the Soviet Union. Nationalist party was led by General Chiang Kai- Shek and was supported by the United States. In 1949, Mao defeated the Nationalists and won the support of China for Communism. President Truman refused to acknowledge China as a Communist country under Mao. Communist Party VS China today: Communist Government of the People's Republic of China. The Communist Party of China was formed in 1921. It was under Mao Zedong's control in 1927. Eventually, Mao led a revolution, and the communist party obtained control in 1947. They followed the example of the soviet model of development through heavy industry with surpluses extracted from peasants. 2013- Xi Jinping Nationalist Party

The Korean War (1950 – 1953) Korea was divided by the 38th parallel into two occupational zones after WWII (North Korea and South Korea). (1945) North = Communist/Soviet South = Democratic In 1950, North Korea invaded South Korea to try to unify the two nations as one. Truman heard news of the invasion and immediately decided to send U.S. troops to South Korea.

The Truman-Macarthur controversy Truman sent General Douglas MacArthur to lead American forces in South Korea. MacArthur landed above the North Korean army and took them by surprise. However, a large Chinese army came to North Korea to fight back against MacArthur. Truman considered using atomic weapons. MacArthur publicly criticized Truman for not using atomic weapons. Truman removed MacArthur from his command and ordered him back to the U.S. General MacArthur

Consequences of the Korean war Dwight D. Eisenhower, (commander on D-Day for the Allied powers) was elected President of the U.S.-1953 Eisenhower promised to end the Korean War. An armistice (cease-fire) was signed in 1953 and ended the war at Panmunjom on the demilitarized zone (DMZ) between North and South Korea. This left Korea divided along the 38th parallel exactly as it was before the invasion. American losses had not driven the Communists out of China or North Korea but they had shown American determination to resist Communism by force.

Nuclear Arms race Nuclear proliferation means spreading nuclear weapon technology. This was an increasing danger that one nation might someday use them. The United States was the sole atomic power in 1945, the nuclear weapon technology they discovered was kept secret. The Soviet Union tested their first atomic bomb in 1949 even though the U.S. had refused to share the secret of the atom bomb with the Soviets.

Nuclear weapons The Hydrogen Bomb was developed in the U.S. in 1952. It was much more destructive than the previous atom bombs. Massive Retaliation - when Americans and Soviets developed new missile technology. These nuclear advances were meant to act as deterrents for the Soviet Union in case they attacked the U.S. (discourage them). Despite this, the United States and the Soviet Union entered the Arms Race. Each superpower began building and stocking up on nuclear weapons.
