The Headless Receptionist Read and annotate. Think about how you might write an analytical thesis for this piece….notice devices and their effect, think about theme and big ideas. Be prepared to discuss.

#17 Intro Notes 9/17 To start an analysis essay, think of SIIT. S= Summary OR I= Image I= Importance- what are the larger issues that might matter or be relatable to others? T= Thesis

For example….Summary In this story, a lonely and ignored office worker finally becomes happy when she loses her job. Many workers today are also very unhappy in their jobs, and many struggle with loneliness and depression as this character does, but they may not all have such a happy ending as she does. In “The Headless Receptionist,” the author uses extended figurative language, depressing imagery, and vivid word choice to express that people with unfulfilling jobs essentially lose their identities.

For example…Image Imagine bottles of wine and brightly wrapped Christmas gifts piling up on everyone’s desk except for yours…the only things on your desk are piles of paper and work that no one appreciates. This is what happens to a character in this story. Many people today struggle with feeling lonely and left out, especially in the workplace In “The Headless Receptionist,” the author uses extended figurative language, depressing imagery, and vivid word choice to express that people with unfulfilling jobs essentially lose their identities.

Write Your Introduction On a the back of the introduction practice, write your introduction, using the SIIT structure. Staple this on top of your other paragraphs.

#18 Conclusions 9/17 Conclusions should wrap up and review for the reader, as well as offer something NEW. Don’t run out of steam at the end! Transition word or phrase: In conclusion Finally To conclude

#18 Conclusions 9/17 S- Summarize your thesis. Don’t repeat it! I- Importance- reflect once again on how these big ideas matter and how people might be able to relate to them. N- New thought. Leave the reader with something new to think about. A thought-provoking question, an interesting new idea, a call to action or change, etc.

Examples In conclusion, the author used many literary devices effectively to express how loneliness can cause a person to lose their identity. Loneliness is something many experience everyday- there may even be someone near you that you have never noticed before. Is there someone at a desk or in an office near you that you have ignored? Maybe we should heed the author’s advice and take care not to let anyone become “headless.”
