Fifth grade in Mrs. Hurst’s classroom. Parent Guide Fifth grade in Mrs. Hurst’s classroom. 1

Personal Introduction I consider it an honor to work with you and your child this year. This is my fourteenth year of teaching 5th grade and my twentieth year at Roundstone. I have a Bachelors of Science Degree in Elementary Education, and a Masters of Arts Degree in Education with an emphasis in Reading/Writing. I completed both of these degrees at Eastern Kentucky Univiversity. I am also a National Board Certified Teacher 2017.

Curriculum Our curriculum is aligned with current state standards. We focus on literacy skills(reading, writing, speaking, listening), math skills (computation and problem solving), and integrated units of study based on social studies and science. For a detailed list of the standards visit the website below. http://www.education.ky.gov/

Learning Environment I believe for a child to learn to their highest potential they must feel safe in their classroom. Classroom rules are listed in the Positive Discipline Plan and on your child’s SOAR report. These documents will be sent home for your review the first week of school. 4

Communication It is very important that you and I have an open line of communication. I use several methods of communication. . Home Folder – Please check each day for notes and news from school. Soar Report – This report comes home on Friday. It includes: 1. An accumulated total of tallies for the week. This will help you and your child know specific areas to work. 2. Any personal notes, and missing assignments will be included in this report. 3. The Soar Report should be reviewed and signed by the parent and returned every Monday. 5

Communication Continued Student Agenda – Students are responsible for writing down daily assignments and checking assignments off as they complete them. Parents will review and initial agendas. 6

Communication Continued You may contact me at school by phone or e-mail stephanie.hurst@rockcastle.kyschool.us Or you may request a conference before or after school or during my planning time (9:05-9:55 am) (Please complete the Communication Survey-please tell me how best to contact you) The school will have midterm conferences throughout the year to discuss student progress. 7

Together we can My goal this year is to help your child reach their full potential. Together we can help them succeed.

Responsibilities of Teachers and other staff members Prepare lessons that challenge and meet individual needs Create lessons that engage the student and allow for student creativity Encourage self-confidence and high self-esteem in students Provide a safe and respectful learning environment Grade papers and post grades in a timely manner Use all possible resources to meet student needs Communicate with parents 9

The Student’s Responsibilities Students in fifth grade are preparing to make a transition into middle school. Therefore, it is important to foster self-respect and personal responsibilities.
