Delta School District Custodial Operations

Topics: Waste Management Custodial Section Sizes Equipment Modernization

Waste Management Starting in September of 2014, all schools in Delta School District started recycling organics (food waste and food-soiled paper products). At that point in time, Metro Vancouver’s Zero Waste Challenge had a mandated goal of diverting 80% of waste from landfills by 2020 via recycling, including organics recycling. Delta School District embraced this challenge as it not only upheld our District’s Vision that included a commitment to environmental sustainability, but we also believed in proper stewardship of all of our resources.

Waste Management Before we started the program in 2014, we were producing 1194 yards of waste picked up monthly of which only 13% was diverted to recycling a whopping 87% went to the landfill. Primarily we were only diverting paper. Since we introduced expanded recycling , we had 1241 yards of waste being picked up monthly, 69% of which was being diverted from the landfill with organics collection (9%) and mixed recycle diversion of (60%), Leaving only 31% of waste for the landfill.

Waste Management Elementary VS Secondary Schools Secondary schools 56 yards or organics material monthly, 256 yards of mixed recycle material monthly and 262 yards of waste monthly. 54% diversion rate 46% still to the landfill. Elementary Schools 60 yards of organic material, 480 yards of mixed recycle material, 127 yards of regular waste, in total 81% of organic and recycle material diverted leaving only 19% of waste for the landfills.

Waste Management Quick tips: Busch Stations with 4 containers (waste, organics, refundable, mixed recycling) 1 full station per 4 classrooms. Only mixed recycling cans in every classroom. Garbage cans retained in shops and medical rooms Delta didn’t purchase connectors for this stations as it would make it difficult to clean soiled cans which also saved us money to invest in more waste stations. Consider purchasing carts for the stations in the cafeteria as that would allow staff to move these stations around easily as needed. Having stations on wheels, it could be moved into gymnasiums for sports tournaments and rental groups as well.

Custodial Section Sizes Secondary Schools: 29,000 sq feet per an 8hr shift. Day custodians are allocated 11,000 sq feet of cleaning area on top of their regular day-man duties. Square footage of storage spaces do not count and gymnasium sq footage are cut into half as it doesn’t take same amount of time to clean a gymnasium as it would take to clean a regular classroom. Elementary Schools: 22,000 sq feet per an 8hr shift. Elementary schools do not have a day custodian. If need rises, day custodian from a neighbouring school gets moved around or an evening custodian/casual gets called on a 2hr overtime callout

Summer Schedule Meetings

Equipment Modernisation Custodial Equipment's Purchased by SD# 37 Recently 1. Nilfisk SC500 Rev Auto Scrubber Benefits- Rev feature (helps remove wax buildups over period of time by scrubbing and refinishing floors with surface prep pads (purple pads). Cuts down on the process for floor scrubbing/refinishing Limits the use and need of few other equipment/supplies Less labour intensive No chemical (District’s preference)

Equipment Modernization 2. Proteam Backpack Vacuum The results of two studies by the Department of Surgery, Division of Orthopedics, at Ohio State University and the Battelle Memorial Institute, determined that the ease-of-use and ergonomic design of ProTeam backpacks allowed workers to vacuum more than twice the area in half the time with less fatigue and body strain (a figure backed by the ISSA official timetables for cleaning). ProTeam Backpacks require less than half the energy and effort to clean the same area as an upright. • Allows more carpet to be cleaned in a shorter amount of time due to the natural walking motion used • Avoids repetitive motions • Results in less body stress • Increases efficiency • Minimizes “hunching over” often associated with upright

Equipment Modernization 3. Nilfisk Advance ES300 Carpet Extractor Benefits: - Walk-behind concept covers larger areas in a short period of time It also comes with a wand attachment and a handheld upholstery cleaning tool (3 in 1 equipment) Handles flip 180 degrees allowing the machine to be used in both direction Technology built in uses less water hence a quick drying time Compact design makes the equipment storage and transporting much more convenient.

Let’s Get Together and Make All Our School District’s a Safe and a Clean Place to Learn! Thank You Harry Kumar
