Presentation transcript:

The Civil War Introduce the slide show by explaining to students that the images they’re about to see are from an internet site called “The Valley of the Shadow.” They are images from the battlefields of the Civil War.

What thoughts and/or emotions come to mind when seeing this image? Escaped slave, 1863

Have the students look at the picture closely Have the students look at the picture closely. What kinds of things do they notice. Point out the drummer boy in the lower right-hand corner. Why is he there? Shennandoah, October 22, 1864

Again, ask the students to really examine the picture Again, ask the students to really examine the picture. Why are there men lying on the ground? Are they dead? What are the four soldiers carrying? What season is it? How do you know? The Wilderness, June 4, 1864

Again, allow the students a minute, maybe more, to look at the image Again, allow the students a minute, maybe more, to look at the image. For this particular image, ask the students about the type of combat during The Civil War. How is different than the way wars are fought today? How is it similar? Gettysburg, August 27, 1864

Give students a minute to look closely at the picture Give students a minute to look closely at the picture. Students will be drawn to the man in the black shooting the man in the white. How did the man in the black get so close to the man the white? Could this happen in a US war today? Gettysburg, August 8, 1863

After students examine the image, talk about the horse in the center After students examine the image, talk about the horse in the center. What flag is the horseman carrying? Where would you want to be…in the front or the back? The man in the center is throwing something. What do you think he is throwing? Gettysburg, August 8, 1863

After students look at the picture, talk about the explosions on the background. Also, point out the line of soldiers in the background. Why, in the heat of battle, do you think they’re in a line? Chancellorsville, May 23, 1865

Images tell us a lot about Civil War battlefields. For example, images tells us about… The style of combat. Let the students read this. Ask the students to tell you what other kinds of things pictures tell us. The kind of weapons. The role of horses.
