Article Future directions and conclusions Gary Marchionini, Information seeking in electronic environments, date????

Methods Read article Highlight key points Notes in margins Draft abstract Share drafts Combine into one paragraph Revise

First Student The article compares the amplification and augmentation roles that technology plays in information seeking behaviors. While amplification increases the amount of information or capability of the user, augmentation allows for new creative abilities or new tasks. It specifically discusses the needs of the librarian and information seeking specialist in the search system. Future trends in information technology are introduced including natural language processing, intelligent agents, ubiquitous computing, and global functionality. Marchionini describes futuristic information seeking scenarios using those technologies

Continued . While there are several problems related to these potential methods, the author emphasizes the importance of the human researcher who drives the information seeking process by making the necessary judgments to search and refine the search to attain the desired result. Designers of information gathering technologies are encouraged to consider the end user when creating design systems which will amplify and enhance natural capabilities and consider the seeker and the search environment rather than just the technology itself.

Second Student This chapter addresses aspects of human-computer interaction in connection with information seeking. Amplifying computational power is compared and contrasted with using this amplification to augment larger tasks, such as creative activities and information-seeking. Some broad goals for future human-computer interaction and possible future scenarios for the use of human-computer interactions are discussed.

Continued Ideal information environments, including virtual reality, ubiquitous computing, and global functionality are discussed and are given theoretical application in three future scenarios. The chapter concludes with possible future research areas, and short term goals to achieve these scenarios, such as using technology to enhance natural capabilities, and more focus given to the information seeking process.
