3.3 Mobile Digital Communication

Overview Demonstrate and apply the knowledge and understanding of the increasing use of mobile communication devices including laptops, PDAs, mobile phones and the technologies which support them: WIMAX, Bluetooth, Wi Fi. Evaluate the technologies which support mobile communication including GPRS, WIMAX, Bluetooth, 3G, Wi-Fi.

PDA A mobile device which functions as a personal information manager and connects to the Internet Features Touch screen Memory cards Wired connectivity Wireless connectivity Synchronization

Mobile phone Features Email Internet Contacts Telephone calls Bluetooth Multimedia Organisers Software applications

Mobile technologies WIMAX Bluetooth Wifi 3G

WIMAX Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access Provides wireless transmission of data using a variety of transmission modes. If there are a lot of users in the same area then performance could degenerate.

Bluetooth Open wireless protocol for exchanging data over short distances from fixed and mobile devices. Uses short length radio waves. Bluejacking is the sending of either a picture or a message from one user to an unsuspecting user through Bluetooth wireless technology.

Wifi Wireless Fidelity Wifi uses radio networks to transmit data between its users.
