Faulty Coordination

Faulty Coordination Make sure you use and or other conjunctions only to connect ideas of equal importance. We are placing two ideas side by side; therefore, they need to be of equal ranking. Correct Coordination: Blake designed an airplane, and Jane built it. Sometimes, writers make the relationship between two clauses unclear by conjoining them with a conjunction, or they are are joining two clauses that shouldn’t be joined.

Sometimes, writers make the relationship between two clauses unclear by conjoining them with a conjunction, or they are are joining two clauses that shouldn’t be joined. Faulty Coordination Production of ships accelerated in World War II, and ships became a decisive factor in the war. I didn’t do well, and the contest was easy. Walt Whitman was one of our greatest poets, and he was from New York. Sometimes writers use so many “ands” to string together sentences like a necklace that it’s hard to follow along. The tractor that drove through the field did a few twists and turns, and the people on the opposite side turned their necks to watch, and everyone laughed. Faulty Coordination

Faulty Coordination So how can we correct faulty coordination? One way to correct FC is to put unrelated ideas into separate sentences. Production of ships accelerated in WWII, and ships became a decisive factor in the war. Production of ships increased in WWII. Ships became a decisive factor in the war.

Faulty Coordination 2. You can correct FC by putting less important ideas into subordinate clauses or phrases. I didn’t do well, and the contest was easy I didn’t do well, even though the contest was easy. Walt Whitman was one of our greatest poets, and he was from New York. Walt Whitman, a native of New York, was one of our greatest poets. Our “stringy” sentences can be broken up by using any of the methods. The tractor that drove through the field did a few twists and turns. Turning to watch, the people on the opposite side laughed.
