Aim: Why did tensions develop between Great Britain and the Americas? Do Now: What kind of rules do you have at home? What are the consequences if you do not obey them?

As the British began to expand their empire in America, so did the French. They began to clash and an intense rivalry developed.

1) 1754 –French & Indian War France and Britain fought for control of land west of the Appalachians. 1763 – Treaty of Paris ends war Britain controlled all land east of the Mississippi .

What problems might exist after the war?

Who should pay? Britain believed Americans should pay for their protection Americans said they were still British citizens and the government should pay

Problems between the Native Americans and Colonists Americans were being attacked by angry Native Americans Proclamation of 1763 – banned all settlement west of Appalachians. Created to avoid conflicts with Native Americans

Critical Thinking Why would this proclamation anger colonists?

Tensions Increase… During the war, the King Authorized Writs of Assistance Writs of Assistance-allowed British troops to search any house, stores and ships

Tensions Increase Britain was in debt due to the French and Indian War King Charles III passed a number of acts as an attempt to lower the national debt

Acts issued by England Currency Act – Colonists cannot print money, they must use British currency Stamp Act – colonists must put English stamps on all printed and legal papers

Quartering Act – Colonists must give English soldiers free food and housing Tea Act – put tax on local tea making it more expensive

Boston Tea Party On the evening of December 16, 1773, a group of men calling themselves the "Sons of Liberty" went to the Boston Harbor. The men were dressed as Mohawk Indians. They boarded three British ships and dumped forty-five tons of tea into the Boston Harbor.

Why did the “Sons of Liberty” take this action?

Intolerable Acts The British closed Boston Harbor until the tea was paid for. b) British soldiers would stay in Boston to keep an eye on the colonists.
