Contraction The process of decreasing volume Example: When a volume of gas gets cold, its volume decreases

Expansion The process of increasing volume Example: When a volume of gas gets hot, its volume increases.

Compression When particles are forced into a smaller space. Example: When you push the plunger in on a capped syringe filled with air.

Kinetic Energy Energy of motion The speed at which a particle moves is directly related to the amount of kinetic energy it has.
