The Origins of Slavery (page 72) Where has slavery existed? What type of slavery existed in Africa? What is the difference between indentured servants and chattel? What began to happen in 700CE that changed the nature of slavery in Africa? What were people exchanged for?

The East African Trade in African Peoples (p.73-74) How is the expansion of Islam into Africa connected to the expansion of trade? How is the expansion of trade connected to the trade of people for goods? What were women and girls captured for? What about boys and men? How were the people captured? What were their journeys like?

The East African Trade in African Peoples (p.75-76) How did the nature of the East African slave trade change in the 18th century? (1700s) What impact did the trade have on the local people and groups? As a result, what did they want from Europeans? Were the majority of African people cooperating with the slave trade? Why do you think the numbers related to slavery are estimates? Why did the East African slave trade end?

Exit Slip How do you think the East Africa trade in African peoples would have impacted the lives of those people who were not captured and traded? CONSIDER: How would their everyday life have changed? What concerns/threats exist now that wouldn’t have existed before? What might a group of people be missing if some were captured?
