Matter & Chemical Change Section 1.2 Organizing matter
What is matter? Anything that… Has mass Takes up space Made of particles
Particle Model of Matter All matter is made of particles. Different substances are made of different particles Particles are always in motion Particles have spaces in between them Particles may be attracted to each other or bonded together
Types of Pure Substances A pure substance is made up of only one kind of matter and has its own unique set of physical properties Element cannot be broken down into any simpler substance Compound is a combination of two or more elements in fixed proportions
Mixtures A mixture is a combination of pure substances Mechanical (Heterogeneous) each substance in the mixture is visible Solution (Homogeneous) each substance is not clearly visible
Mixtures Suspension is a cloudy mixture in which tiny particles are held (suspended) with another substance, and can be filtered out Colloid is also a cloudy mixture, but the particles are so small that they cannot be filtered out easily
Classification of Matter Pure Mixture Made up of only 1 type of particle Made up of a combination of different particles Particles do not chemically combine – remain in original form
Heterogeneous (mechanical) Mixture Colloid Heterogeneous (mechanical) Particles of one substance are held within another substance Particles will not separate Ex. Toothpaste Can see the different substances Ex. Potting soil, cereal in milk Suspension Homogeneous (solution) Particles of one substance are held within another substance -Particles will separate -Ex. Tomato juice Appears as if it is all one substance Ex. Vinegar, air
Pure Compound Element Basic building blocks Cannot be broken down into any simpler substance Ex. Hydrogen, oxygen 2 or more elements chemically combine in specific proportions Ex. water (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2)
