1970’s What changed from the 1950’s to the 1970’s? Protests, lifestyles, Cold War What might change in the 1970’s? What do you know already?

What was American life like in the 1970s? Protests, Rights Movements Domestic events

Life in the 1970s Protests continue What did people protest in the 1960s? Some movements continued, new movements emerge Counterculture faded, protests remained

1970’s Continuing Movements 1- Civil Rights (new leaders) Continuing fight over issues: Policy brutality Access to housing / education (integration) Access to voting 2- Women’s Rights No discrimination / harassment (Equal Rights Amendment – failed) Healthcare

1- Civil Rights Do black kids have the right to access white schools? New education issue= Busing- transporting children to schools outside their neighborhoods Forced integration “White flight” (“white” schools still existed (and were better)) Busing faced a great deal of resistance Do black kids have the right to access white schools? Do white kids have the right to go to school without black kids?

1- Civil Rights Workplace, Education Affirmative Action- special programs for African Americans (then other minorities) Hope- improve status, gain skills Many black Americans historically excluded from positions Some believed it was reverse racism- whites kept from jobs /scholarships/schools

3- Gay Rights Movement 1969- Stonewall riots Police raided a gay bar in NYC, patrons resisted Gay men and lesbians started a movement for rights Issues: No discrimination (employment) Partnership / marriage rights

4- Native American Rights Movement Lives before / during 1970s: Less than 1% of population Massive unemployment (poverty) Very low income rate Lower life expectancy

4- Native Americans Rights Movement Wanted independence from US society Programs to create opportunities on reservations Protests- took over territory, made demands

4- Native Americans Rights Movement Successes: Increased funds to Native American education Won rights to property Businesses developed on reservations Some have own, tribal laws

5- Disability Rights Wanted people of all abilities to live freely Not put in institutions Goals: Access to buildings No discrimination

6- Environmental Movement Environmental movement started with: Rachel Carson, Silent Spring Described problems with pollution, pesticides Problems: Rivers unsafe to swim Smog- fog with smoke Forests cut down Garbage, oil spills

6- Environmental Movement Successes: Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)- government agency that promoted anti- pollution Laws passed: Clean air- cars (car-makers had to hit standards) Clean water (can’t dump in lakes, rivers) Endangered species

6- Environmental Movement Many concerned about nuclear energy Yes- it is cleaner than oil and coal No- radiation is harmful Three Mile Island- Pennsylvania nuclear power plant leaked radiation No one hurt, but people doubted/feared nuclear energy

1970s Protests Write an editorial (opinion-based article) from the 1970’s. Describe an issue people are protesting about. What is your stance? Why?
