I can Identify Numerical and Variable Expressions Write variable expressions for word phrases.

– Variables and Expressions A variable is a letter that stands for a number. x, y, z, a, b, c, etc……

A variable expression is a math phrase that uses variables (x, y, z), numerals (1, 2, 3), and operation symbols (+, /, -, *). x + 5 z / 4 m * 26

Which of the expressions is a numerical expression or a variable expression? What operation is being used? 50 – 5 c – 5 5 * c 57 / 3

You can translate many words for operations into symbols. Can you think of words that would mean: + - x ÷

Word Phrase What it really means Nine more that a number y y + 9 4 less than a number n n – 4 A number z times 3 z * 3 or 3z or 3(z) A number a divided by 12 a / 12 5 times the quantity 4 plus a number c 5 * (4 + c) or 5(4 + c)

Let’s do some examples. Write a variable expression for each word phrase: M more than 19 Two less than a number p The product of a number x and 10 5 less x 10 more than twice a number t
