What you should have notes on VCE Revolutions Date: 14/05/2019 Revolutions Unit 3 AOS 1 Homework Task – Week 5 To Do: Begin your summary notes on the Events May-Aug 1789 Start by creating a timeline of the events in this period. (You might want to also include the lead-up events we’ve studied 1781-88). Use the end of handout 7 to help you with this Either on your timeline, or in dot points, create summary notes on the events listed below. For each event outline the following: Causes of the event What happened (keep this brief, this is the least important part) Outcomes of the event – what followed this (important!) Significance of the event – importance or meaning of the event (most important!) Complete the questions below Three weeks until the SAC – what letter do you want to see on your results? What you should have notes on Tick? The Estates General The National Assembly The Fall of the Bastille The Municipal Revolt The Rural Revolt The Great Fear The Night of August 4

VCE Revolutions Date: 14/05/2019 Homework Task Week 5 Revolutions Unit 3 AOS 1 Homework Task Week 5    Analyse the following source: The Third Estate wishes to have real representatives in the Estates General, that is to say, deputies drawn from its order, who are competent to be interpreters of its will and defenders of its interest. But what will it avail to be present at the Estates General if the predominating interest there is contrary to its own! Its presence would only consecrate the oppression of which it would be the eternal victim. Thus, it is indeed certain that it cannot come to vote at the Estates General unless it is to have in that body an influence at least equal to that of the privileged classes; and it demands a number of representatives equal to that of the first two orders together. Finally, this equality of representation would become completely illusionary if every chamber voted separately. The Third Estate demands, then, that votes be taken by head and not by order. Emmanuel Joseph (Abbé) Sieyès, ‘What is the Third Estate?’ in JA Stewart, A Documentary Survey of the French Revolution, Macmillan, New York, 1951, pp.42-56.     What two changes to voting procedure does Sieyès suggest in this document? ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________(2 marks) What does Sieyès mean when he refers to the Third Estate as the ‘eternal victim?’ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ (2 marks) Caption: ‘We ‘ave for to hope that this ain’t goin’ to last forever’ Date: May 1789
