Notes: Before the Revolution Very unequal society Bourgeoisie feel like they should have a greater say in government Urban poor and peasants are starving All third estate want rights and democracy French debt is enormous and France is on the verge of bankruptcy

Notes: The Early Revolution: 1789 Estates General: Third Estate gets the same power as the 1st and 2nd estates. Feels cheated. Forms their own legislature and insists on writing a constitution People in Paris attack the Bastille in support Women’s March: The King is dragged back to Paris and basically becomes a hostage

Notes: Bourgeoisie in Charge: 1789-1792 France gets a constitutional monarchy based on individual freedom and rights. Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen Feudalism Abolished First French Constitution passed France enters a war with Prussia and Austria, is losing. The government starts to lose control of their radical allies.

Notes: the Reign of Terror 1793-1794 Radicals seize the government, execute the king To defend the revolution, they try and execute anyone accused of opposing the revolution. All French men are drafted into the army France begins to win its wars 16,000 are executed, many without trials Slavery abolished, all men allowed to vote, women’s rights improve

Notes: The Reaction 1794-1799 Bourgeoisie, moderates, and conservatives retake the government. Many radicals are executed. The new government is corrupt and ineffective. Relies on the army to keep it in charge

Notes: Napoleon 1799-1815 Napoleon turns France into an Autocracy France conquers most of Europe Code Napoleon introduced to all conquered countries: Equality of men before the law Fair trial rights Free religion No women’s rights Napoleon eventually defeated and exiled
