Who Is Eratosthenes of Cyrene? Why is he so important? Title

Research Thesis Eratosthenes of Cyrenes was the first astronomer to really make a huge stride in the astronomy field, and led the way for other astronomers like Steven Hawkings, Alan Guth, Galileo Galilei, and many more.

Leader: Eratosthenes of Cyrenes Legacy: He was the first astronomer to make a huge difference in the astronomy world. He also set a path for future astronomers. Leader & Legacy

He is best known for being the first person to calculate the circumference of the Earth, which he did by applying a measuring system using stades, (the length of stadia during that time period). He was also the first to calculate the tilt of the Earth's axis. Additionally, he may have accurately calculated the distance from the Earth to the Sun and invented the leap day. He created the first map of the world incorporating parallels and meridians, based on the available geographical knowledge of the time. During his time at the Library of Alexandria, Eratosthenes devised a calendar using his predictions about the ecliptic of the Earth. He calculated that there are 365 days in a year and that every fourth year there would be 366 days. Supporting Evidence
