Student Led Teaching Strategies Staff Development

Staff Development Goals Have a student led strategy for every core classroom that can also be used in electives Get the teachers involved in going over each strategy Do not leave any questions unanswered. This is when we need to know everything we can.

“Teach Me” For use in Science classroom (could be used in others Students will learn about a topic that applies to a specific unit. All topics will be broken down so that the students are divided equally among the topics Students will research the topic to present to the class Other students will ask probing questions to get all the information they can about the topic

“Teach Me”….Goals Of Have the student be able to understand what they are learning in the greatest detail possible. Empower a child with their learning This is a fantastic tool for educators because it allows them to see what their students do and don’t know, what they fully understand, and where the teacher need to fill in the gaps of their learning Improve a student’s oral communication skill.

“Reciprocal Teaching” For use in the Math classroom Students will be split into groups of four Each student will be assigned a number one through four. They will then go to a station were they will learn how to perform a certain operation. Then students will get back in their original group of four were they will teach the group the concept they learned. Sometimes called mini-group or station learning

“Reciprocal Teaching”….Goals of Engagement of all students in the learning taking place. Fostering of teamwork for all students in the classroom. Small group purposeful talk among the entire class. Students are moving around not sitting in ome place the entire class.

“Socratic Seminar” Typically used in English classroom The purpose of a Socratic Seminar is to achieve a deeper understanding about the ideas and values in a text. In the Seminar, participants systematically question and examine issues and principles related to a particular content, and articulate different points-of-view. The group conversation assists participants in constructing meaning through disciplined analysis, interpretation, listening, and participation. Questions must be prepared for classroom in advance so that there is a continuous dialogue during the class.

“Socratic Seminar”…..Goals Of The discussion is not about right answers; it is not a debate. Students are encouraged to think out loud and to exchange ideas openly while examining ideas in a rigorous, thoughtful, manner Teacher as a facilitator --- Be seated at the level of the students and remind them to address each other and not you! Everyone participates --- this is not a grade as it were it is a discussion with no right or wrong answers so every student should feel free to talk on topic

Project Based Learning For use in the Social Studies classroom Students are given a project or complex question that they must research and answer through in depth inquiry Students are allowed to ask questions but teacher can only guide their direction not influence its outcome

Project Based Learning…Goals Of students go through an extended process of inquiry in response to a complex question, problem, or challenge. Rigorous projects help students learn key academic content and practice 21st Century Skills (such as collaboration, communication & critical thinking). Foster Blooms Higher Levels Skills such as Reflection, Judgement, and Creation of Topics
