Q1,J7 What are your thoughts about To Kill a Mockingbird so far? Are you enjoying it? Why / why not? Do you have any questions about what you read? What are your predictions for what will happen later in the novel?

Spelling Skill #5 Definitely / Defiantly Definitely (adverb): In a clear and definite manner. Eg. I definitely want to go to a movie tonight. Defiantly (adverb): Boldy resisting or challenging. Eg. The student defiantly refused to hand over her cell phone.

Chunking Breaking a larger text down into “bite-size chunks” in order to make it easier to swallow.

In your group… Each student will have a different article about The Great Depression. You are responsible for reading, annotating and summarizing your article in the following way. Your article is “pre-chunked”. Read one chunk at a time and do the following for each chunk. Identify any unfamiliar vocabulary and look up the words in the dictionary provided. Identify the main idea and write a one sentence summary. Identify any connections (especially with Mockingbird).

Now… Each person in the group should take a turn in sharing their article with the group. You should use your summaries to guide you in briefly sharing the content and meaning of your article with your group. As a group, using information from all the articles, write a paragraph entitled “What we Know About The Great Depression.” Be prepared to share these paragraphs with the whole class.

Homework Read and annotate up to the end of chapter 11 by Monday, September 22.
