Welcome to 10.3 English Mrs Price

Unit 1: Changing Times Spend a minute or so reading through your outline for the year….

Year 10 BOYS will be learning… Year 10 GIRLS will be learning… Aims – to receive an education so that you may enter the workforce and earn a wage. This is important as you will be the main breadwinner and need to support your family. Unit 1: ‘Changing Times’ A look at the concept of REPRESENTATION in a variety of texts, and how key contextual issues in society are reflected in those texts. Core Text – To Kill A Mockingbird. Unit 2: ‘Poetry’ Poetry unit focusing on Character and Voice in poetry. Students will engage with a wide range of poetic forms and narrative voice. Unit 3: Writers Workshop Students will learn creative writing skills pertinent to the Stage 6 Preliminary and HSC requirements. They will produce a variety of texts, often responding to a stimulus, and create a portfolio of writing to submit. Unit 4: Love and Other Forms of Torture Students will consider how notions of love are represented in Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. They will continue to develop their essay writing skills and analysis of prose and poetry throughout this unit. Examination will be a combination of short answer questions and essay writing. Aims – to learn how to be a good housewife so that they may support their future husband. There is no need for girls to receive a high level of education as they wont be entering the workforce. Unit 1: How to be a good wife HAVE DINNER READY: Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal--on time. This is a way to let him know that you have been thinking about him and are concerned with his needs. MINIMIZE ALL NOISE: At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise from the washer, dryer, or vacuum. Encourage the children to be quiet. SOME "DO NOT'S": Don't greet him with problems and complaints. Don't complain if he is late for dinner. Count this as a minor problem compared to what he might have gone through that day. MAKE HIM COMFORTABLE: Have a cool or warm drink ready for him. Have him lean back in a comfortable chair or suggest that he lie down in the bedroom. Arrange his pillow and offer to take off his shoes. Allow him to relax and unwind. LISTEN TO HIM: You may have a dozen things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first. Unit 2: Appliances that help with your household chores Unit 3: Ways to remove soap scum from the bathroom Unit 4: Household sewing and baking

Any questions or concerns about what we’ll be doing this year?

Are you telling me that: Times have changed? Society thinks differently now? How? What has caused this change?

I want to speak out about a social issue I want to speak out about a social issue. I want my voice to be heard by the masses. How do I do this?

Key concepts: Texts reflect ideas in society at particular moments in time. These ideas can change over time. Texts reflect contextual issues or concerns. Texts have the power to voice these ideas for a reason. These contextual issues are represented in particular ways for particular purposes. It is not just the ideas that have meaning, but the way in which they are presented. Composers make deliberate choices when representing contextual ideas to achieve their aims.
