Introduction of Transformational Leadership Transformational Leadership according to Sullivan and Decker (2001) define transformational leadership as “a leadership style focused on effecting revolutionary change in organizations through a commitment to the organization’s vision.” There are four characteristics of transformational leadership: Idealized Influence Inspirational Motivation Intellectual Stimulation Individualized Consideration

Introduction of Transformational Leadership (Continued) Gandhi is a transformational leader and uses all them in his process to have independence for India. For example, Gandhi tries to sacrificing himself to have India be a independent country. Also, he gathers the Indian people to follow him and stand up for India’s independence from Britain. Finally, Gandhi was upset with uncooperative Indians and used his leadership powers to make them become more cooperative.

Overview of the use of Transformational Leadership Gandhi used transformational leadership because he starved himself to show he would not tolerate any violence to achieve India’s independence. Also, Gandhi went to jail several times in order to get his point across that he would not back down from the British even without violence. Also, he lead his Indian people to act as a whole and no one is better then each other. In addition, Gandhi led many protest and marches to stand up. Finally, Gandhi had many speeches to rally the Indian people to strive for excellence and finally become independent country.

The Salt Tax Challenge the Process: Gandhi challenged the British Government by ending the salt tax and illegally making salt. Inspired a Shared Vision: Gandhi inspired the vision by showing the possible outcome of this event. For example, the salt tax will end and a step closer to India’s independence. Enable Others to Act: Gandhi enabled other to act by marching to the sea and using non violence to get back at the British for the salt tax. Model the Way: Gandhi modeled the way for the Indian people by setting up the march to the sea and make salt. Also, he modeled the way having him and his Indian people not fight back against the British.

Transformational Leadership Idealized Influence: Individuals in a leaders vision to achieve the best possible future. Example: Gandhi had the vision to have independence for India and people followed him. For example, the Indian people took Gandhi’s advice and understood his vision and followed him throughout many protest in India and South Africa. Inspirational Motivation: A leader who can convince individuals to set goals to better the future. Example: Gandhi used inspirational motivation in many ways. For example, Gandhi convinced the Indian people that life would be a lot better with independence and not being under the reigns of the British empire.

Transformational Leadership (Continued) Intellectual stimulation: A leader that helps their followers gain strength and helps them become smarter as they follow them. Example: Gandhi used Intellectual stimulation in many ways. For example, Gandhi used speeches and rally's to educate his Indian followers that they have the same rights as the British citizens in India and South Africa. Individualized Consideration: A leader that knows his own strength's and weakness’s and isn’t afraid to ask others for help and acknowledges each of his followers, also he doesn’t consider himself as a leader, but as a whole group. Example: Gandhi used individualized consideration in many ways. For example, Gandhi never took credit for his action, but he did take credit as a group. However, Gandhi would take responsibility/credit if his group ever did something wrong and face jail time for it.

Showing the Transformational Leadership during the Civil War Challenge the Process: Gandhi got independence for India. However, Jinnah proposed a deal so India would be to separate countries, but Gandhi didn’t want and wanted the violence to stop between the two groups. Inspire a Shared Vision: Gandhi inspired a shared vision by communicating to the people that he wanted the two groups to be at peace and wanted India to be one whole country and work together. Enable Others to Act: Gandhi enables other to act by talking to a Hindu who killed a Muslim child because his child was killed by an other Muslim individual. Then Gandhi told him to find a Muslim boy who has no one and take him and raise him as his own child.

Showing the Transformational Leadership during the Civil War (Continued) Model the Way: Gandhi modeled the way because he continued to fast to stop the violence between the Hindu’s and the Muslims. This fasting helped settle some of the violence between the two groups.

Conclusion of Gandhi Gandhi was one of the great leaders in the history of the world. Gandhi fits the role as a transformational leader because he showed many great characteristics such fasting to stop the violence and protesting to finally give the independence that they deserved. Therefore, Gandhi is powerful leader because of his excellence and willingness to help others instead of himself.
