What is Rheumatic Heart Disease? it is the most dreaded complication of rheumatic fever Refer to the chronic heart valve damage that can occur after a person had an episode of acute rheumatic fever

Rheumatic Fever Is an inflammatory disease that occurs following a Streptococcus pyogenes infection, such as strep throat or scarlet fever Acute rheumatic fever often produces information of the heart

What are the signs and symptoms of rheumatic heart disease? Rheumatic fever typically occurs two to three weeks after a strep throat infection. Common symptoms associated with rheumatic fever involve a general unwell feeling, fever, and joint pain and swelling that alternates locations in the body.

Causes Rheumatic heart disease is caused during the course of the rheumatic fever, when your heart valves may be damaged. The valve may not open or close properly or becomes stiff and narrow. If you had rheumatic fever you are at higher risk of recurring heart attacks, infections of your heart's lining or valves and further damage. You also have a higher risk of congestive heart failure, stroke or abnormal heart rhythm.

Prevention and care The best way to prevent rheumatic heart disease is to treat strep throat with antibiotics, thereby preventing rheumatic fever. if you do have rheumatic heart disease you may need to take blood thinners, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers and/or digitalis. Diuretics may be necessary because of excess fluid due to an inefficient heart. Antibiotics are necessary before you have any dental work or surgery.

If you are light-headed, dizzy or nauseated, have high or low blood pressure, have chest pain and a fast or slow pulse, you should contact your doctor as soon as possible. You should seek emergency care if you have difficulty breathing or have a fast or irregular heartbeat.

Tips on how to take care of your circulatory system Avoid smoking cigarettes or staying with smokers. Exercise regularly Eat a well balanced diet Live a clean environment Maintain a healthy weight Have a positive outlook in life
