DO NOW What would you do if the world around you was collapsing, bad economy, no jobs, etc. and the government was not working? Explain in complete sentences.

Fascism Rises in Europe 15.3

What is fascism? A military political movement. Emphasized loyalty to the state and one leader. No clearly defined theory or program. (Salutes, rallies, uniforms, special colors)

Similarities and Differences to Communism Rule by a dictator. Only one political party. No individual rights. State is supreme. No democracy. Believed that each class had a place in society. Nationalist instead of internationalist. Fascist party included aristocrats, industrialists, veterans, and workers.

Problems in Italy Disappointment over lack of territory from Treaty of Versailles. Rising inflation and unemployment. Italy looks for a leader. Newspaper editor/politician Benito Mussolini promises to rescue Italy.

Mussolini Takes Charge! Founds fascist party in 1919. Attacks communists and socialists. October 1922, 30,000 fascists march to Rome. Demand King Victor Emanuel III put Mussolini in charge. He Does!

Discussion Question Do you think it was a good idea for King Victor Emmanuel III to give Mussolini power? What might result from this?

Il Duce’s Leadership Mussolini = Il Duce Gets rid of democracy. Outlaws all other political parties. Secret police. Censors media. Outlaws strikes.

Mussolini In Ethiopia Italy failed to take Ethiopia as a colony in the 19th C. Mussolini wants to correct that, He invades and takes control of Ethiopia. Ethiopia asks the League of Nations for help but they only tell Mussolini to stop.
