Presentation transcript:

Effects of WWII Unlike WWI, WWII was fought to the bitter end. Germany & Japan kept fighting even after their defeat was certain. This gave the Allies time to plan what the post-war world would look like.

Setting Goals Yalta Conference (Feb ‘45): Big Three  “unconditional surrender”; free elections in E. Europe; USSR enter war vs. Japan Potsdam Conference (July ‘45): New Big Three  plan to divide G into 4 zones; new borders for Poland

New World Map Changing boundaries/ allegiances/ conflicts (E. Europe; China; Japan) End of Western Euro imperialist domination Shift in balance of power  US + USSR = superpowers

International Cooperation New world economy: IMF, World Bank Est. United Nations (UN) – 1945 Cooperation, not equality Perm 5 on Security Council: US, China, USSR, Fr, GB Universal Declaration of Human Rights (‘48)

War Criminals Axis violated Geneva Convention (humane treatment of wounded soldiers/ POWs during war) Many Japanese, sentenced to death incl. Tojo & general resp. for Bataan Nuremberg Trials: prosecuting Nazis for war crimes
