Quiz ch 24 Conrad’s parents are going on a trip to Europe T/F they are going to Dallas Conrad is staying with his grandparents T/F Jeannine works at a McDonalds T/F She works at a bakery Paul is Jeannine’s birth dad T/F He is her mom’s friend/ ex lover Jeannine is happy her mom is seeing new people T/F She wants her parents to get back together

Summary Calvin and Beth are leaving to Europe to visit Beth’s brother. Meanwhile, Conrad is staying at his grandparent’s house. While eating dinner with them, Conrad’s grandma bugs him about his grades and how he has it too easy. Later, Conrad goes to Jeannine’s work to pick her up. They stop at her house first, and find a black car parked in their driveway. The car belongs to Paul Ferrier, the man Jeannine’s mom had an affair with. Jeannine is sad that her parents will most likely never get back together and cries on Conrad’s shoulder.

Quote “Last year when the hole was closing over his head, there were no lectures, no words of criticism from anyone.” - Shows people surrounding Conrad have started to treat him like normal.

Character changes Conrad: Much happier. When he hears the woman from the bakery thought he looked suspicious, he just shrugs it off and laughs, instead of taking it personally like he might have before. Calvin: Calvin is now willing to go on vacation and without Conrad Beth: Hasn’t changed; still remote and to herself

Conflict The major conflict is when Jeannine cries about her parents. She turns to Conrad for support, and this makes him feel strong and needed.

Literary terms Figurative language: Pg 194, “Giving his Grandmother ammunition.” Pg 194, “Last year when the hole was closing over his head.” Sarcasm: Pg 193, “I thought id cruise through town, run a few red lights, smoke some hash, get a couple girls in trouble, nothing special, why?” Metaphor: Pg 194, “She is 10 years behind the times.” Pg 200, “He feels as if he could stand here holding her forever.”

Grandparent’s house Bakery Conrad’s home Jeannine’s home Setting Grandparent’s house Bakery Conrad’s home Jeannine’s home

Discussion Is it selfish for Jeannine to cry about her own problems when she knows Conrad has gone through so much worse? Is Beth still the bad guy if she was a victim of bad parenting?
