Works Cited Guidelines MLA 8TH EDITION Works Cited Guidelines

MLA 8TH EDITION PRINCIPLES Cite core elements shared by most works There is often more than one way to cite a source Documentation needs to be useful to readers

MLA 8TH EDITION PRINCIPLES The “container” idea: MLA recognizes that information has to be housed inside some kind of container—words can’t just float around in space. Quite simply, the container is usually: a book, a journal, a web site, a newspaper, etc. BUT this container is usually housed within another container: often a database

CORE ELEMENTS Now instead of each type of source getting one and only one correct way of citing, we need to go by the idea of “core elements” In other words, the key pieces of imformation that will help the reader be able to track down the source you used.

CORE ELEMENTS Source: Author Title (either in quotation marks or italics depending on the source) Container One Title of Container One (in italics) Other Contributors Version Number Publisher Publication Date Location Container Two Title of Container Two (in italics) Other Contributors Version Number Publisher Publication Date Location (for a web source, this is a URL CORE ELEMENTS

Author, First A. , & Second Author. “Title of Work Author, First A., & Second Author. “Title of Work.” Title of Container One , other contributors, version, number, Publisher, publication date, location. Title of Container Two, other contributors, version, number, publisher, publication date, location.

Magazine Article from Database - Friscolanti, Michael. "The Drug Dealers Next Door." Maclean's, 2 May 2016. Opposing Viewpoints. *MLA 8th edition recommends the inclusion of the URL ; especially when it is the only way to locate the item.  However, since I have included a database name here, and database URL's are notoriously long and complex, I have omitted it.  This is a preference, so we recommend checking with your professor for their preference.
