Money for MOP$ Gary and Jenni Hoag

Money for MOP$ We go to school to learn how to make money, but we are not taught how to handle money responsibly! As a parent, youre in the perfect position to help your children through the money maze of life by helping them form healthy money habits and by teaching them how to give, save and spend. Today in Money for MOP$, we want to provide you with tips and truths for helping both your kids and you manage money in a way that honors God!

Tips for 3-5 year olds Give – Let your son or daughter put a coin in the offering plate every Sunday at church. They will actually look forward to going to church to do it. Save - Give your son or daughter a jar and put your spare change in it. Help them see how coins add up. Do basic counting activities with the coins. Spend – Use cash. Kids cannot understand credit. Help them understand that coins and bills are things we give to get things we need.

Tips for 6-10 year olds Allowance starts here. Make em earn it doing chores! Give – $1 per week. Ask them make the decision where the money should be given. Save - $1 per week. Open a bank account for your son or daughter. Have them go with you to make the regular deposits. Spend – $1 per week. Basic budgeting starts here. If they want something, they need to accumulate their spending dollars until they have enough $.

Tips for year olds Basic working begins: lawn mowing, babysitting, etc… Give – Take your son or daughter on a mission trip or other experience to expand their understanding of how blessed they are and how vital it is to give to others who are poor or need to learn about God. Save – Compound interest. Teach your kids how to make money work for them while they are working for money. Spend – I have everything I need. I have learned to control my wants. Open a checking account.

Tips for year olds They get their first real job. Give – Challenge your son or daughter to give their first fruits back to God when they get their first paycheck (and every one after that). Save – Encourage Grandparents to help them learn how to manage assets by helping them set up a brokerage account. Save to help pay for college. Spend – Allow them to get their first credit card while under your watch so that they dont go off the proverbial deep end of debt in college.

Tips for MOP$ for Saving The Joseph Principle a.k.a. The Storehouse Principle The LORD will command the blessing on you in your storehouses and in all to which you set your hand, and He will bless you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you. Deuteronomy 28:8 Set aside a little every month. Learn to live within your means. That way, money is there for dealing with emergencies.

Tips for MOP$ for Spending Live on a budget. Spend money without feeling guilty. Chart your expenses for a month. Keep doing it. Set up basic expense categories: Giving, Mortgage, Car, Other Debt, Insurance, Utilities, Gasoline, Gifts, Dry Cleaning, Cable TV, Food, etc… Pay off your credit card every month. Eat out less. Plan your meals. Think of ways to have family fun that cost $0.

Truth #1: Be Content But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by contentment. For we have brought nothing into the world, so we cannot take anything out of it either. If we have food and covering, with these we shall be content. But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a snare and many foolish and harmful desires which plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is the root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. 1 Timothy 6:6-10.

Truth #2: Trust in God! Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy. Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is life indeed. 1 Timothy 6:17-19

Did you know? If you own a car, you are in the 90 th percentile of the richest people in the world. If you own a house, you are in the 95 th percentile of the richest people in the world. If you make $25,000 your household income is in the 90 th percentile of the highest income earners in the world. If you make $50,000 your household income is in the 99 th percentile? (

Personal Questions Realizing how financially rich and materially blessed we are in this present world, personally and prayerfully consider these questions: How are we handling all God has entrusted us with? Are we giving, saving, spending with a plan? Are we content with food and clothing? Are we trusting in God or in our money?

Discussion Questions 1.Giving: How often do you give? To what do you give? Is there something you could sacrifice to be able to have more money to give? What are you going to teach your children about giving? 1.Saving: Have you lived on less than you have earned? How about your kids? Do they have spending parameters so that they have some money saved? What is one new thing you could do to save or to teach them to learn to save?

Discussion Questions 3.Spending: Do you purchase needs before wants? Are you paying off your credit card(s) every month? How are you teaching your kids good spending habits? 4.Be Content: Is your focus in life merely to get rich? How much is enough? Have you controlled your wants or are stuffocated? Whats one area you could work on?

Discussion Questions 5.Trust in God: It is easy to find security and hope in stuff. Only God is worthy of our trust. Stuff is to be enjoyed and shared. Anything need to change in your life?
