Reconstruction

Ford’s Theater (April 14, 1865)

The Assassin John Wilkes Booth

The Assassination Jumped down from the presidential box, caught his spur on a draped flag, landed hard and broke his left leg. Shouted to the audience “Sic semper tyrannis” state motto of Virginia Two other plots to kill VP Johnson and Secretary of the State Seward on the same night.

WANTED~~!!

Now He Belongs to the Ages! Funeral train that carried Lincoln’s body back to his hometown took 14 days. Approximately 7 million turned out to mourn his passing.

The Execution Booth tracked down by union cavalry to a tobacco barn and set the building on fire. Booth refused to surrender, one shot was fired. “Tell my mother I died for my country. I did what I thought was best.” “Useless, Useless”. 4 other conspirators publicly hanged: David Herold, Lewis Powell, George Atzerodt and Mary Surratt.

The Conspirators David Herold —Herold accompanied Booth to the home of Dr. Samuel Mudd, who set Booth’s injured leg. Remained with Booth till the end. Lewis Powell —He entered the Seward home and severely injured Seward, Seward’s son, and a bodyguard. Mary Surratt — Surratt owned a boarding house in Washington where the conspirators met. George Azterodt —he was assigned to kill Vice President Andrew Johnson, but lost his nerve and stayed in a hotel bar, drinking, instead.
