Day 1 – The Atom Sci 10 Chemistry
Definitions Chemistry: study of the structure and properties of matter Element: a substance with only one single type of atoms *found in The Periodic Table of Elements Atom: the smallest part of an element can exist on its own or in combination with other atoms
The atom is made up of 3 types of particles: protons: Positive charge (+1) In the nucleus (centre) of the atom neutrons: Neutral (no charge) (0) In the nucleus of the atom electrons : Negative charge (-1) In clouds (shells) that surround the nucleus
Group Activity Use your periodic table, Google, etc. to find the # of protons, electrons and neutrons for the atoms below. Model them with the playdoh provided. C Be H N Ne Complete the table and answer questions a,b,c. *You’re looking for patterns here.

An atom's mass The nucleus is the part with the greatest mass because protons and neutrons have larger masses than the mass of electrons
The Periodic Table - introduction The periodic table contains elements and information on them
The Periodic Table - introduction The element’s symbol is O The name of the element : oxygen The atomic number (the number of protons) : 8 The atomic mass (the average mass of an atom of this element) : 15.999 Rounding this number to the nearest whole number gives us the number of protons + neutrons : 15.999 rounded = 16 # of neutrons = atomic mass (rounded) – # of protons (atomic number) = 16 – 8 = 8 neutrons The number of electrons = the number of protons (atomic number) when the atom is neutral (not charged). Oxygen has 8 protons so it also has 8 electrons.
