1. Preamble: What reason(s) did the Founding Fathers give for their decision to write out a declaration? 2. Statement of beliefs: What beliefs did the Founding Fathers declare they held? 3. List of complaints: What are a few of the complaints? 4. Statement of prior attempts to redress grievances: In what way(s) did the framers claim to have already tried to address the complaints? 5. Declaration of Independence: What will change in the colonies as a result of the Declaration? 6. Why is this document set up in this specific order (five sections)? 7. Why did the colonial leaders feel it was necessary to put their declaration on paper? 8. How does the diction/word choice of the document improve its credibility?

Declaration Assignment Working in your groups, you will draft your own declaration using one grievance about school. First, pick one grievance to make a declaration about. The transcript of the Declaration of Independence will serve as a model; student documents must contain the same sections: preamble, statement of beliefs, list of complaints, statement of prior attempts, and declaration. For example, your list of 10 complaints will compare to the “He has…” complaints on pages 143- 146.

Today… Establish your group – 2/3 students per group Pick your grievance Break it down into 10 complaints EXAMPLE: Grievance = homework Complaints = we need time to do other activities, not all students have a place to work at home, we do not have a teacher available to answer questions…etc…
